Review of Chapters 7 and 8

Below are a series of statements or equations. Some of them are true for all random variables. Some are true only for independent random variables. Some are true only for binomial random variables. Some are true only for geometric random variables. Some are false.

Next to each statement, write (A) if it is true for all random variables, (I) if it is true only for independent random variables, (B) if it is true only for binomial random variables, (G) if it is true only for a geometric random variable and (F) if it is false.

  1. E(X) = X = mX
  2. mX = np
  3. mX = S[xP(x)]
  4. SP(x) = 1
  5. mX+Y = mX + mY
  6. sX+Y = sX + sY
  7. sX = np(1-p)
  8. s2X+Y = s2X + s2Y
  9. s2X = var(X) = E(X - mX)2
  10. s2X = np(1-p)
  11. mX = 1/p
